Record daily life : Vlog

Vlog is a combination word of video and blog. Vlog refers to content that captures one’s daily life in a video unlike in the past, which was recorded in a text or photo. Nowadays, Z Generation is crazy about V-logging. Generation Z, called digital native, was born in the mid-1990s to mid-2000s, and refers to consumers who are more familiar with images than text-based platforms. Especially, as the influence of Z-generation, video-oriented platforms are growing rapidly, and more companies are actively utilizing them for marketing. There’s a growing number of marketing using social media, and there’s a huge amount of advertising through YouTube as well. Z-generation users are very high compared to different age groups across most mobile apps. According to a survey conducted by mobile analysis company App Ani in 2018, Z-generation users spend more than 20 percent of their time using mobile apps, and their most used applications were found to be more than 30% more active than other age groups. YouTube, a social media platform for video sharing and streaming, allows users to upload and share various videos. It is already a very familiar platform for people, and there are already many creators who have been making money from YouTube since a few years ago. There are various genres, such as makeup, fashion, funny videos, cooking, travel, and games. Among them, Recently, more popular video clips of ‘Vlog’ produced by college students and office workers are gaining huge popularity, with the subscribers of the popular V-log channel reaching from thousands to hundreds of thousands. V-log videos, which have no specific narrative structure or purpose, are very popular. One of experts said, “The generation of people who are more familiar with mobile environments than any other generation is more interested in travel, hobbies, and food than material affluence, and enjoy sharing and showing off these things on social media,” and “Instead of boredom of focusing for a long time, they quickly absorb short, fragmented content.” she said. According to Incross, a digital ad company, mobile users spent more than twice as much time on YouTube as of last October. Keywords searched on YouTube also had a lot to do with daily life. The most searched word was ‘Cover Music.’ It was followed by keywords such as “how to”, “OOTD” and “eating show.” Cover videos represent content that has been implemented in its own way, and how to do it, which is a trend that search on search engines like Google is shifting to YouTube. OOTD is a content that introduces ‘Outfit Of The Day that I wore today. An eating show(Mukbang) is a video that literally shows people eating, satisfying their vicarious satisfaction. Incross analysed that popular video contents have characteristics of short amount, subtitling, and longitudinal video within 10 minutes. Snack videos, which can be enjoyed lightly through mobile devices such as short dramas and movies, seem to be gaining popularity among young people.

As demand for V-log production is increasing, related industries are also releasing products that are specialized in video production. Camera is the most essential item for video production. while major brands such as Sony and Canon have provided high-definition video, they also released products that are easy to carry and light to carry. Sony has released a camera smaller than the palm of its hand, and Canon is the first to support 4K video shooting. Many easy editing tools have also been developed for people who are new to video editing with V-log production. In particular, editing applications are representative. In fact, some of the most popular Vloggers with hundreds of thousands of subscribers do not use the usual editing programs, such as Final Cut, Adobe Premier, and After Effect, but also use the smartphone app to complete editing the video.

The number of people in their 20s or 30s and even teenagers who start YouTube is increasing. This is because The simplicity of being content their daily life with no effort required to making and also not require any difficult extensive editing techniques for making a new contents. The entry barrier to V-logging is very low considering that most of the people who dreamed of YouTuber could not take on the challenge due to the burden of planning and editing content. The real jobs of YouTuber are also diverse. Because they can do V-log without having the ability to eat dozens of hamburgers at once or make up skills like professional makeup artist. Creators who operate channels with professional content usually have their own business, but Vlogger, who makes daily content, has a job other than YouTube. Therefore, there are people from various occupations such as office workers, students, housewives, businessmen and freelancers.

Why are young people crazy about V-logging? Just as there is a saying that humans are the most curious animal, curiosity about others about how others live seems to be the most popular factor of Vlog.

I asked June, who is planning to open a daily YouTube channel soon, why she wants to create a V-log. “The biggest attraction of daily life video is that it can leave my memories alive in a frame.” she said. She said she felt it was not easy to capture everything in her writing and photos, even though she has continued to record her daily life through blogs and personal Social media. Also, she said, “Records also mean sharing with someone, but they’re meant to leave my mark.” And “I don’t think there’s any way we can record our memories as vividly as the video did,” he said.

Analog esthetic: Why does analogue still popular in a digital world?

In digital society, the existence of cameras is now a very important device for people. In fact, there were already cell phones with built-in cameras even before smartphones were introduced, but now the camera has gone beyond the function of the built-in camera to replace the original camera. Every year, each mobile phone company competes against each other with upgraded pixels and new features of built-in camera. One of the examples, Apple's iPhone can record 4k videos on its mobile phone. And Samsung's new model, Note 9, has added a remote control feature that can be filmed far away. These advances in technology have changed people's standards for photography. Even without professional photo-graphics equipment, anyone can take high-quality pictures with their own mobile phones. Furthermore, the digital media world we live in is a world where pictures taken on smartphones can be shared directly with friends through social media in real time. It can be said that it has all the necessary functions and convenience. However, these days, people prefer things with analogue sensitivity to digital devices. So that kind of analogue vibe is added to digital device, and people get nostalgic from a lot of products. An app to make a photo with a digital camera, but it feels like it was taken with a film camera, vinyl turntables with Bluetooth speaker function, A electronic pen for tablet PC that provides a sense of writing like writing on a piece of paper, a keyboard that looks like a real old typewriter, And there are e-readers designed like flipping paper books. In addition to the above example products, many electronic devices stimulate people's memories.

A New Way Of Enjoying Art : SELFIE?

In Manhattan, New York, there is a kind of candy museum with Art works and sculptures made with candy are hung everywhere. Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpiece, “The Starry Night,” was made up of 15,000 candies. Since its opening in August 2018, the museum has been attracting many tourists. Tickets are always sold out for the first 200 people every hour. There is only one reason why they visit Candytopia. It is to make memories at a unique museum and take pictures there. Photo booths are placed all over Candytopia to take pictures. It is not just a camera, but an augmented reality program with various effects. For example, if you take a picture with a rainbow background and check the picture, a rainbow appears on your smartphone screen. These photos can be uploaded directly to the social media account. George Zapata, chief operating officer of Canditopia said,

“It’s designed to provide the maximum experience with social media including Instagram, Snap Chat and Facebook in mind.” and”These photos on social media call another tourist.”

The Color Factory , near Soho is a unique museum with 16 rooms decorated with different themes and colorful colors. The museum is also very crowded, as its biggest attraction is known as a good place to take pictures on Instagram.  The ice cream museum, which was created three years ago in a pop-up format, attracted 300,000 viewers for five days,  it’s beacause quickly gained popularity through social media. Social media is changing the experience and spending habits of museum and art works. Experts say that it is not just the art appreciation of objects and works, but It’s a new art appreciation in the digital media world that people go and take selfies with art work and share them on social media.

The digital director of the Jewish Museum in New York, JiaJia Fei, said, “In the digital age, we expect the traditional art objects to be reborn as social objects.” and she also mentioned that,

“Before the digital age, it was a message ‘I saw this,’ but today it’s a message ‘I went there, I saw it, and I took a selfie.’

In other words, it is the concept of being at the center of ‘myself’ rather than the works of art in museums and art galleries. This has become a new trend created by social media and smartphone cultures. The keyword is that the works on display in museums must be immersible and able to communicate with visitors.

A good example is ‘The Obliteration Room’, which was first installed for the Queensland Art Gallery by Japanese installation artist Yayoi Kusama. In this white room, visitors can attach color stickers wherever they want. Later on, it turns into a total light room that no one expected. You can take a selfie photo where you can upload it on Instagram and get a “Like” picture.

The photos posted on social media are continuing their explosive success story in pop-up museums, as they bring in more visitors. Installation artists created an environment where visitors could participate in making artworks or take selfies with bright lighting and simple, elegant artistic decorations. Pop-up art galleries have become trendy as they prove businesslike Even if a well-known installation artist did not participate, If the exhibition hall is made so that pictures can be taken well, it has been proven to be businesslike.

As the trend has become more popular, even traditional museums, which were conservative in photography, are changing. Most museums have strictly banned photography to protect copyrights and light-sensitive paintings. However, with the growing influence of social media, the policy on photography has changed dramatically since 2015. The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City already allow ordinary people to take photos for non-commercial purposes. The number of visitors flocking to museums has increased since they were encouraged to take pictures.

However, there are disadvantages to these trends. According to the Brush Research Center, the more visitors to the museum focus on taking pictures and posting them on social media, the less excitement they get from art works in gallery.

“A viewer who intends to take pictures and share them on social media takes away the opportunity for real people to feel moved by the artwork,”  said Alexandra Barash, a marketing expert at New York University professor.
