Back in July I had the incredible opportunity to work for a small, family run second hand car dealership. I spent a month working in their online and digital marketing department and this is my experience:
A Day in the Life
6:30 AM: I woke far earlier than I would normally wake, however, I was full of nerves about starting a new job where I had no previous experience and I did not want to make a bad first impression. While getting ready in the morning I was starting to feel more and more anxious, though excited, about starting this journey. It is a career I have been intrigued in for several years now and this was my first chance to get a foot in the door of the marketing world.
7 AM: On the train and beginning to feel even more nervous. Not only was this my first time starting a new job, but it was my first time travelling to a brand new area I have never visited before. It was exciting travelling through London, however I was constantly filled with dread at the thought of potentially getting on the wrong tube and ending up in the complete wrong part of the city and being late on my first today. In the end I arrived 20 minutes early, which hugely helped to relieve the stress.
9 AM: Introductions and tour! I first met Nam who is head of marketing and sales at West London Motors. He gave me a quick tour of the office and the showrooms and then showed me to my desk where I would spend most of my time working. My first impression of the office was that it was smaller than I expected, but the showroom of cars was phenomenal! I have always loved cars, so to see such a huge collection of BMW’s, Jaguars, Land Rovers, Mercedes and more made me feel like a kid again. I was no longer nervous, but filled with excitement to be working here. After the tour, Nam and I sat in his office and he explained what exactly my role would be and the projects I would help out with. Then it was time to start working! Nam explained that my first task was to find out how to improve the company’s social media presence, so I decided to do some research.
1 PM: Lunch time! I decided to head to a nearby cafe for a coffee and some food. A ham and cheese toastie, packet of cheese and onion crisps, a cappuccino and an hour to relax and reflect on my experience so far.
2 PM: Back to work and eager to start a new project! This time I would take part in a more hands on practical project. My task was simple, create new content for Instagram. I began by photographing some of the cars in the showroom and it was a blast! I got some incredible photos of some spectacular cars. I then did some Photoshop to make them stand out a bit more and Boom! they were ready for Instagram.
4 PM: Group meeting! After finishing the social media posts I was called into a meeting with Nam and Michael, who runs most of the company’s digital marketing, to discuss future marketing projects. The main topic of discussion was a potential YouTube channel, so we discussed the type content we could create, the target audience involved, and the intended goal we would achieve.
5 PM: Finally finished! It was a long, but very rewarding day. Even though it was only my first day I felt like I had already achieved so much and I was looking forward to the rest of the month working here. All of the original nerves I had before starting were gone and replaced with an excitement for what was to come.
