Thanks to cheaper equipment, social media, higher quality technology and more support and availability, it now easier than ever before to become a filmmaker. If we jump back 30 years the only way you would be considered to make a movie was if you had some type of film degree or if you had lots of money. However, the evolution of technology has created the opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to create their own content and to get their voices heard. From cheaper equipment, to easier distribution digital technology has paved an easier path for amateur filmmakers wanting to break out in the industry. But how exactly has technology helped filmmakers?

If you checked out my blog post on The Movie Camera you would know that when cinema first came about you needed  very large, heavy pieces of equipment to be able to shoot your film and it would definitely put a dent in your wallet. However, you can now shoot your entire movie on your smart phone, something that the majority of people nowadays  have access to. You can shoot your film with a simple click of a button and edit it just as easily with many free movie editing apps available from the app store. If you really wanted to go all out many extra accessories are available to make you feel like a real filmmaker including tripods, grip kits, shoulder pods, and stabilisers. A positive of cameras now being mass produced is you can now buy highly advanced cameras without having to pay a hefty sum meaning amateur  filmmakers can easily film their projects without having to raise the funds to do so. Great examples of movies with low budgets but soon gained worldwide recognition include 2007’s Paranormal activity and 2004’s Napoleon Dynamite both of which were filmed with modest budgets but due to the growing recognition of film festivals and the power of the internet they soon gained blockbuster status.

There’s no argument that in recent years it has become a whole lot easier to promote and distribute your film. Thanks to the innovations of YouTube and social media platforms filmmakers can now reach a wider audience faster. Sites such as YouTube allow big budget movies to release promotional trailers and sneak peaks of their films however, it also allows for anybody wanting to share their content the opportunity to post their films and share it to a global audience. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram help filmmakers market their film and attract an audience. By staying consistent with your posting and sharing behind the scenes pictures with your followers allows you to build an audience before they even see your film. With cinema slowly fading out a new way of film distribution is coming to light, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Sky Cinema are beginning to release films without them ever being released in cinemas resulting in more and more people expecting new movies to come straight to them because lets face it nobody wants to pay full price for a movie ticket when you can watch it from the comfort of your own home for a cheaper price.

Although Social media is often criticised it does have its perks. Being able to connect and communication with millions of people with a few clicks of a button is truly amazing and it certainly does have its benefits for aspiring filmmakers. Not only is it now easier to shoot and distribute your film, it is now a whole lot simpler to learn tips and tricks of filmmaking through people sharing their ideas on social media and visiting sites such as  Film School Rejects, Filmmaker, and IndieTalk all who offer filmmakers advice on everything from writing the perfect screenplay to how to get the right lighting. Filmmaker and IndieTalk allows its users to share their stories and offer tips on a forum so that other amateur filmmakers can read and communicate back. YouTube Doesn’t just offer a place where people can share their content but also a place where you can learn. If you type ‘Filmmaking for beginners’ into the search bar thousands of video tutorials come up offering free, informative advice from other filmmakers. You can also view filmmaking masterclasses from industry experts without having to spend a penny.
