Social Media addiction:
People nowadays accessing social media sites or apps that are out there such as Facebook; Instagram, Snapchat, Tinder and many, many more social sites have become the cornerstone of media communication. These sites also create a connection which allows users to create a sense of belonging.
Teenagers are the ones who spend too much time accessing Social Media Platforms. Teenagers who access the internet for positive things can be good. However, if teenagers are only using the internet for only social media use then it is very worrying.
Risk factors for Social Media Addiction:
One risk is the psychological factor. In today’s society, we can see people every day being on their phones accessing Social Media sites and genuinely becoming addicted.
“It’s so funny how social media was just this fun thing, and now it’s this monster that consumes so many millennial lives.”
Mental health perspective of Social Media Addiction:
People becoming addicted to Social Media is not the only issue. Additionally, It can be seen to be similar to other mental health issues. For example, people who are becoming addicted are more vulnerable than those who aren’t.
There are some factors that should be considered which can put teens at a much higher risk for developing such technology addictions.
Risk factors of social media addiction to teens:
The risk factors that teens can face include;
People with mental health issues also find if they go online it can be a distraction from their symptoms they have. Not only this, but there are also some risk factors which can be developed. This includes forming a social media addiction which can include;
One research conducted in 2011 by Dr. Daria Kuss were the first academics to systematically review the scientific literature on excessive social media use. The research, Dr. Daria did with a small minority of people the study showed:
“There was a significant detrimental effect on many aspects of their life, including their real life relationships and academic achievement among those still in education. We argued that such signs are indicative of addiction”.
So… now to the good news about Social Media Addiction. There are actually quite a few people that are addicted to Social Media. However, there is a problem that if people do become actually addicted then it can become a huge problem.
The other issues that can arise from addiction can be seen to be annoying for example doing things such as;
- Checking social media apps whilst out with friends
- Constantly checking the phone every few minutes
- Taking out the phone when doing social activities
Social media addiction has to be also controlled and implemented in educational establishments where social media sites such as Facebook could implement using a timer. This will allow people to only access the site for a limited time thus this example can be seen to be used in the gambling industry which can easily be implemented in the use of social media sites.
There are also treatments out there that are available to tackle social media addiction where the most successful treatment out there for online addiction is cognitive behavioural therapy. This therapy is out there to help people change the way they think as well as behave.
Some could say that social media platforms are ruling the world where they are merely taking over the whole of society. There is no special weapon or superpower that can stop people from accessing Social Media platforms or reducing people from being addicted.
In addition, people are just merely in control of their own self and are thus responsible for their own actions on how long they want to spend on social media. In addition, one thing that could help reduce this is from businesses; educational establishments, social media operators all having a part to play in being able to reduce the excessive social media use.
